RPS: So, you said your goal with Civ V was to streamline it. Not necessarily making it less complex, but making play smoother and more accessible. To that end, I was wondering if instead of swapping squares for hexes, you’d considered swapping squares for a tile-free system where the movement of units is shown by a circle.

JS: It’s something we discussed, but not something we felt comfortable with. Soren Johnson, when he was working on Civ IV, famously stated that Civ is a turn-based game and a tile-based game, and the tiles, he said, were more important than the turns. Which I would actually agree with.

The thing about Civilization is that it’s a big, complex game, but it’s also a game that can be distilled down into very discreet elements. At the beginning of the game you have a settler. Then you tell it what to build. Then what? Then you pick your research. OK. What now? You move your unit. Oh, OK...

...We get a close-up look at Civilization V's extensive editing tools, and then jump into multiplayer with the creators of the game itself and get horribly slaughtered...

Citer
...The worldbuilder itself is remarkably easy to use, since it can generate a new map in a matter of minutes. While you can painstakingly build a giant map tile by tile, you can also use the random map generator to create one of the game's basic map types (Pangaea, archipelago, and so on) and use a paintbrush tool to change any and all of the terrain on the map (so you can add a nice schmear of forest through your pregenerated desert with a single stroke of the mouse)...

Citer
Competitive multiplayer can be a very different experience where military might becomes a lot more important.

etc...

...You will be foolish, though. You set your graphics settings low in order to maintain a speedy flow of game, not realizing that you would be turning the pretty fog of war (see up top?) into functional black hexes. The Civ people would rather you show the world nice fog, not black hexes. But, because you are a virtual-world conqueror and because you agree to caption your images — these images were taken from a computer not running Civ V on normal graphical settings, hence the simplified fog (or something) — they will allow you to show your eager readership how you out-Civilized the Americans....

...In the preview build we have access to, which keep in mind is not a complete version of the game, there's room to invite up to 16 players into a match, and it appears as though you can mix AI opponents with human players. Each can be set on a team depending on how you want to set alliances, and for hosting there are a large number of tweaks that can be made to how a match plays out...

Et encore une sur le mode multijoueur  ::)

10 septembre 2010 : Gameinformer

...The most important thing about Civ V multiplayer is that it gives players the tools to play the game the way that they want to. I've got some issues with how the underlying game design handles the challenges of players playing full-bore to win against other players, but the wide variety of options means that you can set the game up to best fit your preferred style of playing Civ.

The default setting features simultaneous human play and a tight turn timer, which ends your turn by force if you let it run all the way down. The timer starts around 40 seconds, and lengthens as empires grow and managing them becomes more involved. This works fine in theory, and if nothing else it absolutely keeps the game jumping. The difference between having the timer on or off is like the difference between chess and speed chess. It works okay in Civ V, but not as well as in Civilization Revolution – Civ V is a deeper game with more to do, and the timer is a lot more binding here...

I am Hiawatha, chief of the Iroquois peoples.

In the beginning, I built the great city of Onondaga and my people's culture spread over the land. I chose a location that was close to the sea and to forests that were rich with silkworms. Setting my wise men on learning the secrets of harvesting the threads by building plantations was a simple task. Workers trained in building such improvements came next, but though the Iroquois soon learned the secrets of the calendar, our knowledge did not allow us to make the tools needed to cut down sufficient trees to make room for our plantations. My workers were idle for years...

A few weeks ago we brought you an interview from GamesCom with Civilization V's Lead Designer, Jon Shafer. Well, we had such a blast talking with him, we decided to go back for round two! Deep in the headquarters of the Illuminati, somewhere in the depths of London, we sat and chatted to Shafer, as well as Project Art Director Dorian Newcomb, about everything from how much we all love Strategy Informer, to Stardock, to Piracy, Cloud Gaming and beyond!

Get comfortable, because this one is just a little bit epic. Enjoy!

...The interface is also much better organized than previous versions. ...Thankfully, Firaxis not only salvaged this concept for inclusion in Civ IV but also radically improved the execution; critics and players alike lauded the game’s multiplayer component. So, when I jumped in for a few hours of Civ V multiplayer with a small group of games writers and a 2K representative recently, I was pleased to discover that this iteration looks to continue the upward trend for the series’ multiplayer...

...It's also probably the most accessible Civ to date, and that has to do with the excellently presented user interface. Clearly inspired by Revolutions, the UI alerts the player to the most relevant information, but in a very non-intrusive way. There are no annoying popups, events are instead placed in a list on the right of the screen above the "Next Turn" button. The list can get little cluttered when large events happen late in the game, like when a Civ declares war and everyone follows suit, and the time between turns is a bit longer than I'd like, but it's easy to overlook these small complaints now that I no longer leave my capital building nothing for a few turns...

...Okay, empresses and kings, let's get some housekeeping out of the way first: The review copy of Civ 5 I played crashed (very inconveniently) from time to time on each of the three different computers I used. Don't panic, I'm sure this will get resolved. However, first thing to do once you get the game -- who are we kidding here, you know you vets are buying it! -- is switch the auto-save function from every 10 turns to every three (or less). Trust. Housekeeping issue #2: Take those "recommended" PC specs seriously...

Trade is much more realistic this time around. Unless you’re greatly in or out of favor with another civ, you won’t find the other leaders to be unreasonably stingy or spineless pushovers -- all reasonable offers will be considered. It’s also smarter; when I offered an oil resource to a civ that didn’t have the technology to utilize it, they flatly refused my offer of mysterious black sludge even though it was vastly more valuable than what I was asking for in return.

The introduction of city-states adds an extra layer of intrigue to Civ V. These standalone cities can be conquered or offer unique benefits like military units and culture if you befriend them. They will often request help if their safety is threatened by barbarians or other civs, which gives isolationist players (like myself) compelling reasons to get involved in world events. City-states also play into voting for diplomatic victories when the United Nations is built, so spending the time to interact with them is central to the game.

Whenever a game with as much hype and legacy as Civilization V comes along, it generates a tremendous amount of discussion and debate. Even before the game's release, as snippets and details are discovered, would-be fans are either extolling the virtues of the Greatest Game Ever or decrying the Greatest Travesty of the Gaming World. Some will exclaim that Civilization V is not a Civilization title at all, while others will say it's merely a gussied-up, carbon-copy version of a previous installment. The truth, of course, is always somewhere in between. For me, Civilization V is a very good game, with many elements distilled from previous titles, mixed with a healthy dose of fresh ideas. It's not simply a re-make of an earlier version, and that's not at all what I wanted. It does make some rather major changes to the Civilization brand, and for the most part I found those changes to be solid ones. Through it all, however, Civilization V keeps the same "Civ" feel that draws me in and sucks away countless hours of time...

Civilization V is so addictive because it appeals to the nurturing side of human nature. Every move you make in the game bears its own positive or negative consequences. You must constantly evaluate what your civilization needs in order for it to improve.

For example, if you expand your borders too close to another country’s, there’s a chance you’ll anger its inhabitants and make future negotiations more difficult. Continuing to anger them will cause them to declare war on you. Like a good game of Chess, Civilization V requires that you always think several moves ahead.

Civilization V Makes Addictive Gameplay More Accessible Than Ever

Civilization 5 is a fantastic turn-based strategy game, retaining the same addictive gameplay the first Civilization brought to PC gaming almost 20 years ago. In many ways, Civ V is the best representation of the series and certainly the most accessible for new and old players alike. Not all of the changes work or enhance the game, but most are a large improvement towards an even more playable entertainment experience. Between Starcraft 2 and Civilization 5, PC gaming is far from dead, folks!

The heart of the Civilization fantasy is unchanged. You still manage cities, developing them from rude collections of mud huts into gleaming modern metropolises. Vast armies and armadas are again at your command, waging global war for conquest, defense, or resources with everything from spears to nukes. The land must still be worked, the primordial wilderness tamed through your people’s sweat and blood. Your ultimate goal is yours to choose: Diplomatically unite the people of the world under your benign leadership, launch a viable colony ship into outer space, conquer the globe through force of arms, or create a glorious utopia through enlightened civility.

...What’s the most-important tip you’d give first-time players? Veteran gamers?

I definitely recommend that first time Civ players listen to the team of advisors present in the game. We actually run an additional copy of the AI software to assess the game situation from the player’s point-of-view to come up with those recommendations, and much of the advice there is top-notch.

Civ veterans will need to pay more attention to the naval game now in Civ V. Coastal cities surrounded by water on two or three sides are difficult nuts to crack, especially if the defender has supporting naval units just off the coast whittling away your attackers. In such a situation you need to take command of the seas yourself. With a few of your own naval units providing naval bombardment, that city will fall to your assault quickly.
